Game Recap:
The Dreadsox began their fall 2000 season with a 22-12 loss to Slaves of Tim. The Dreads held
a brief 1-0 lead after the first inning when Curtis Knocker Nakamura led off with
a triple, then scored on an H.R. Puffn Steff Zabriskie single. The lead
quickly evaporated in the second inning, as the enslaved ones ran around the bases as if the
freedom bell was chiming them into a frenzy. Nine slaves scored in the inning, but the Dreads
were able to get three runs in the bottom frame, thanks in large part to back-to-back doubles
from Philip Phlipper Hallstrom & Sandy Sander Hallstrom. The Dreads
liked the slaves so much, that they let them serve up another 8 runs in the top of the 3rd
inning, then went scoreless themselves in the bottom frame. The Dreads deficit remained
at 13 runs through the 4th inning, as both teams scored 4 runs during their turn at bat. The
slaves got one more run in the top of the 5th for a 22-8 lead, so the Dreads needed 5 runs in
the bottom half to stay alive in the game (and not have the game end with the 10-run mercy rule).
Jay J-Bang Matsudaira started things off with a lead-off homer, then Cindy
Helmet Louie smacked a double. After Stephanie Stun Gun Dunniway singled,
Helmet Louie scored on a Vince Snagglepuss Brooks base hit. New Dreadsock Deborah
Howler Wolfe advanced the Stun Gun to third base on a fielders choice, and
Knocker Nakamura plated the Stun Gun with a single to cut the lead to 11. The lead was trimmed
to 10 after Sander Hallstrom singled in the Howler, but the Dreadsox comeback was cut short
when David aka Cody Brown Senan grounded out to third to end the game.
Defensive Play of the Game:
In the top of the 4th inning, Kurt Lil Hurt Hayashida went deep into the hole
to field a ground ball, and fired to first in time to get the out on the man running down the
line.
Offensive Play of the Game:
With 2 outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the 4th, LF Philip Phlipper
Hallstrom pulled a shot to right field that got past the defense for a 2-run homer.
Laugh of the Game:
Playing defense in the bottom of the 5th, the Dreads turned a nice double play. With Slaves
runners on 2nd and 3rd, and no outs, 3B Marc Psycho Nagle fielded a ground ball
and threw to 1B David aka Cody Brown Senan in time for the force out. With the
runner trying to score from 3rd, Cody Brown fired home to wife Mary Scott The Chief
Senan. The Chief caught the ball, and there was a slight collision at home plate. The Chief
was able to hang on to the ball as she applied the tag to the runner, even though her
catchers mask ended up precariously dangling down around her neck. This couldve
gone as the defensive play of the game, because it was such a nice play, but there was some
comedy involved.
