Game Recap:
The Dreadsox started their summer 2000 campaign with a hard fought 15-10 victory over
Careless Swingers. SS Kurt Lil Hurt Hayashida kick-started the Dreadsox
season with a lead-off homerun, but the lead disappeared in the bottom of the first. The
Careless Swingers answered with a lead-off homerun of their own, then piled on 3 more runs
for a 4-1 lead after 1 inning. The Dreadsox recruited some new players this season, and
a few of them got a chance to show their stuff in the top of the 2nd inning. After singles
by LF Jay J-Bang Matsudaira and new CF Stephanie Stun Gun Dunniway,
new 1B David Senan aka Cody Brown cleared the bases with a 2 RBI triple. David
later scored when new ROV Kay K.O. Ounaphom hit a ground ball to the shortstop,
who graciously threw the ball into the Dreadsox dugout to allow Kay to advance to second.
SS Chris Bootch Burch then hit a solid base hit to right field. The ball bounced
a couple times, then rolled right by the stunned outfielder, allowing both Kay and Bootch to
round the bases on a 3-base error. Again, the Dreadsox 6-4 lead did not last long, as the
Swingers got 4 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd for an 8-6 lead. That was the last time the
Careless ones would have the lead, as the Dreadsox got a lead-off homer from OF Eric
Shady Shadle, then base hits from 3B Curtis Knocker Nakamura, P Sandy
Sander Hallstrom, RF Philip Phlipper Hallstrom, and ROV H.R.
Puffn Steff Zabriskie for 3 runs in the 3rd. The Dreadsox then turned on the
defense, as they allowed the Swing set to score only 2 more runs in the remaining 5 innings,
while scoring 6 more of their own.
Defensive Play of the Game:
The Dreadsox closed out the game with style, retiring the Swingers 1-2-3 in the bottom of
the 7th. The final out of the game came when a Careless Swinger spanked a ball deep to right
field. It looked like trouble, but Philip Phlipper Hallstrom ran back on the ball
and stretched his long (dare I say gangly?) arms to their full extent to make a nice catch.
Offensive Play of the Game:
With one out and Sander on first in the top of the fifth inning, Knocker hit a shot to right
center field. Sander rounded second, and looked for the sign from third base coach Marc
Psycho Nagle. Deciding that she would keep running until told to stop, Sander
rounded third, at which time Psycho gave her he stop sign with his hands practically in her
face. Sander put on the brakes, almost falling on her butt in the process, and gracefully
stumbled safely back to third.
Laugh of the Game:
In the bottom of the third inning, the Dreadsox pulled out their secret weapon. They put
Mary Scott The Chief Senan behind the plate at catcher. The Chief first broke
the Careless Swingers concentration at the plate with her jabber, then broke everyone
to hysterics with a well-timed yell of encouragement to pitcher Sander Hallstom. Its not
quite clear exactly what words came out of that tiny frame from behind the catchers mask
in that Southern drawl, but it was something like, Thats right... roll them in like
thunder, strike them out like lightning! Sander struck out the next batter, and the
Swingers only scored 1 more run the rest of the game.
