Game Recap:
After treating their first game of the Summer 2001 season like it was the first team practice
of the year (which it basically was), the Dreadsox got their bats and gloves working in the
second game of the double header vs Northwest Suites. The start looked gloomy for the Dreads,
as they were only able to muster a single base hit in the first two innings, while they allowed
a Not-so-Suite 10 runs to score in the bottom halves of the innings. But the Dreadsox turned
it around in the third inning, collecting base hits from P Sandy “Sander” Hallstrom,
LF Susan “Smiley” Lyons, and C Cindy “Helmet” Louie. IF Curtis “Knocker”
Nakamura popped a fly ball to the left fielder, which was promptly dropped for an RBI 2-base
error. OF Eric “Shady” Shadle highlighted the rally with a 2 RBI double, en route to
a 4-run inning. Still down 10-4, the Dreadsox defense held NW Suites scoreless in the bottom
of the third. The Dreads added two more runs in the fourth inning, as OF Stephanie “Stun
Gun” Dunniway led off the inning with a single, moved to third on CF Jay “J-Bang”
Matsudaira’s double, and scored on SS Kurt “Li’l Hurt” Hayashida’s 2
RBI double. The Suite ones tried to get back the momentum in the bottom of the 4th, getting a
triple and RBI single with 1 out, then placing runners on 1st and second with another base hit.
P Sandy “Sander” Hallstrom fielded a ground ball hit back to the mound, and got the
force at third for the second out, then ROV “H.R. Puff’n” Steff Zabriskie closed
the door on the inning when she scooped up a ball hit through the infield, and fired to second
in time to get the force on the runner coming from first. The Dreadsox bats then went back to
work, as Lori “Tiger” Johnson, Marc “Psycho” Nagel, and Sander Hallstrom
each collected base hits. Then, after a Knocker Nakamura reached on a fielder’s choice,
Smiley Lyons cranked an RBI double, followed by a Shady Shadle triple to drive in 2 more runs.
The Dreads weren’t done, as HR Puff’n Steff, Philip “Phlipper” Hallstrom,
and J-Bang Matsudaira generated base hits to cap off the 6-run inning, putting the Dreadsox up
12-11. The Dreadsox defense shut the door on the opposition, allowing only 4 hits and no runs
in Northwest Suites’ final 3 at bats, while the offense produced a couple more insurance
runs for a 14-11 Dreadsox victory.
Defensive Play of the Game:
We have a tie!
•In the bottom of the 5th inning, CF Jay “J-Bang” Matsudaira got a great leap on a
line drive to shallow left-center field. The ball wasn’t hit very high, but J-Bang was
able to hustle over to make a nice sliding catch.
•Not to be outdone, LF Susan “Smiley” Lyons had a defensive gem of her own in
the very next inning. Smiley was the target of a blooped ball to shallow left field. Luckily,
Smiley has great speed, and was able to make an amazing tumbling grab off her shoetops to
retire the side.
Offensive Play of the Game:
Down 8-11 with runners on second and third in the top of the 5th inning, Eric “Shady”
Shadle ripped a 2 RBI triple to right-center field, feuling the Dreadsox go-ahead rally.
Laugh of the Game:
I’m sure something funny happened - it always does. Unfortunately, I can’t recall
what funny thing happened, and I forgot to make a note of funny events in the scorebook.
