Game Recap:
The Dreadsox had a couple more men show up for the second game, enabling the Dreads
to play with their full 5-man, 5-woman lineup. The additions of Marc Psycho
Nagel and Cleatless Clark Lyons was much welcomed, but the Dreads were
still unable to defeat Brookshire Homes. Again, the Dreads started off the game with
a lead. They held Brookshire scoreless in the first inning, then scored 3 runs in
the bottom frame. Brookshire came back with some solid hitting in the second inning,
earning 6 runs on 7 base hits and a double. After both teams went scoreless in the
3rd inning, Brookshire extended its lead to 13-4 with seven runs in the fourth. The
Dreads answered with 4 runs of their own, but the Homers broke the game open with 8
runs in the top of the 5th inning. The Dreads were unable to score in the bottom frame,
and lost by a final of 21-8.
Defensive Play of the Game:
LF Susan Smiley Lyons once again was a virtual vacuum in the outfield.
She tracked down 4 more fly balls in this game, including 2 nice grabs of balls hit
off the bat of Brookshires she-man. The second grab was a solidly hit line
drive that Smiley charged in and grabbed at waist level, causing the frustrated batter
to yell, Would you pleeeease stop that?!!
Offensive Play of the Game:
Todays offensive play of the game wasnt a positive play for the Dreadsox,
but it did seem to be a memorable turning point (for the bad) in the game. Down 6-4
with one out in the bottom of the third inning, the Dreadsox loaded the bases for
Jay J-Bang Matsudaira on base hits by Cleatless Clark Lyons,
Philip Phlipper Hallstrom, and Cindy Helmet Louie. J-Bang
hit a hard bouncer past the pitcher. The ball was about to skip into the outfield
for a possible 2 RBI base hit, but the ball took another big hop and hit Phlipper
in the leg as he started to run from second to third base. The play ended with a
deadball out number 2 of the inning, and the next batter grounded out to retire the
side.
Laugh of the Game:
Although LF Susan Smiley Lyons was catching everything hit her way, she
had a bit of a mishap with her arm in the second inning. With one out and runners
on first and second, a Brookshire batter lined a base hit into left field. Smiley
scooped up the ball, and saw the runner from first turning the corner from second
to third. Smiley reared back, and put everything she had into gunning out the runner.
Unfortunately, the ball sailed on her and I mean sailed. The ball flew over
the fence, banged off the roof of the Dreadsox dugout, ricocheted with another bang
off of the adjacent fields dugout, then rattled against the field 1 fence and
bleachers.
