Game Recap:
The Dreadsox traveled to Fort Dent Park in Tukwila for their double header vs Nextel Communications,
and lost the first game 7-13. Things looked pretty good for the Dreads early, as LF Philip
“Phlipper” Hallstrom and ROV Kay “K.O.” Ounaphom collected singles with two outs,
then CF Jay “J-Bang” Matsudaira used his “dork swing” to perfection. With the
three or four steps that the outfielders moved in after his comical first swing, J-Bang hit a line
drive just over the reach of the left fielder for a 2-RBI triple. The Dreads defense then shut out
Nextel in the bottom of the inning, who promptly returned the favor by shutting out the Dreads in
the top of the 2nd. Nextel halved the lead in the bottom of the second, then tied the game 2-2 at
the end of three innings. The Dreadsox were held scoreless for the third inning in a row in the top
of the fourth, then fell behind when Nextel scored 3 runs in the bottom frame. The Dreads came storming
back with 2 runs off an Eric “Shady” Shadle homerun to score “H.R. Puff’n”
Steff Zabriskie. Then the Dreadsox defense had “the inning.” “The inning”
hasn’t happened for a while, where the team seems like they just can’t buy an out. When
the dust settled, the Dreadsox found themselves down 5-13 after an 8-run Nextel 6th inning. The
Dreads nibbled back with 2 runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough, as they fell
to 0-3 on the season.
Defensive Play of the Game:
LF Curtis “Knocker” Nakamura ended the first inning with a nice double play. With runners
on first and second, a Nextel batter popped a fly ball down the left field line. Knocker hustled
over to make the catch, then threw a strike to 2B Sheri “Shaggy” Smith to catch the
Nextel runner who had wandered too far off second base.
Offensive Play of the Game:
Eric “Shady” Shadle’s clutch 2-out 2 RBI homer in the top of the 5th inning brought
the Dreads back to within 1 run of Nextel.
Laugh of the Game:
LF Curtis “Knocker” Nakamura hit a shot down the left field line in the top of the 6th.
The Nextel left fielder moved to his right to field the ball on the hop, but fell down as he reached
for the ball. The ball got behind the fielder as Curtis rounded first. The fielder got up, and
chased down the ball as Knocker rounded second, then fell down again as he turned to make the throw.
All the poor left fielder could do at that point was to sit on his butt as he watched Nakamura cross
home plate for the only run of the inning.
